Book Review: Anthony Kiedis - Scar Tissue

Anthony Kiedis - Scar Tissue
With Larry Sloman

One of my new years resolutions is to try and read a book a month, and the first book I read and completed this year (albeit a couple of weeks late) was Anthony Kiedis’ Biography Scar Tissue. Being the first Biography that I have ever read, I was extremely glad to have chosen this one, as I have read reviews of other biographies and they didn’t sound impressive.

His story is a real account of the good old fashioned saying “Sex, Drugs and Rock ‘n’ Roll”! This guy really has done it all, and from a very young age. Raised by a drug dealer father, hatred of authority and all the other bad stuff that was around him, it is surprising he didn’t end up a total fuck up. But instead, he used his experiences and feelings to help create one of the best bands in the world, the Red Hot Chilli Peppers.

Even though I also wanted to read more about RHCP (yes I know it is AK’s bio, not RHCP’s bio), he did explain in quite a lot of detail the creation of RHCP and I learnt a lot that I had no idea about, such as facts about the bands many different line ups, their style of music creation techniques, other known bands such as Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Janes Addiction, Pearl Jam and many more who they crossed paths with.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I fully recommend it to anyone who likes Red Hot Chilli Peppers as it will give you a deeper understanding and appreciation for their music. I have also started listening to a lot of their really early stuff as he explains what a lot of the songs meant and how they were meant to be heard.

After reading this biography, it has inspired me to read more biographies, I think some in the list will be Marilyn Manson, Billy Connolly, Noddy Holder and Slash. So check back soon to read more biography and book reviews!

Movie Review: He Was A Quiet Man

“He seemed like such a nice guy.. He pretty much kept to himself…”

Christian Slater, Elisha Cuthbert & William H. Macy
Directed by: Frank A. Cappello Bob Maconel (Slater) plays a stressed office worker, who wants to take his revenge one step closer than most of us ever dream of, and carries a gun to work every day. His carefully planned shoot up of the office is ruined though, when another colleague beats him to it and shoots everyone. When he realises that his colleague has shot the girl of his dreams, Venessa Parks (Elisha Cuthbert), and is about the finish the job, Maconel suddenly becomes the hero by killing his colleague to save Parks life. His boss, Gene Shelby (Macy), promotes him to a high position in the company, Maconel starts dating and looking after Parks as she is now paralyzed.

But everything is not all as it seems….

When I was watching the film, I was not sure what to expect, but I became instantly hooked from the first few minutes . The film is apparently suppose to be a Comedy, but I didnt get that, there were some funny moments in the film, such as the fish, but I would class this more as a psychological thriller as you know something is going to happen, you know something isnt quite right, and it keeps leaving little teasers throughout the movie, that make you question even more “What the hell is going on? What is going to happen? Is this all just in his head?”.

The quality of acting was superb, Slater really gets into the mindset of his character and kept the “shy and not quite right in the head” personality going at top notch throughout the whole movie. Parks plays the role well as a “beautiful and succesful woman” turned “quadriplegic in a heartbeat”, and because of this situation she is in, her personality changes often, going from “really sweet and nice” to “really mean and horrible”. Macy plays the boss of the company where all this happened, and just like in Fargo, he plays someone who is trying to look innocent but is hiding a lot of the truth. (What is that? I hear you say… Well, you will just have to watch the film).

Oh yeah, and there is some interesting camera work aswell.

All in all, I will give this film a good 8 out of 10. The acting was brilliant and the psychological weirdness was to me, what made the film so good.
