I don’t reckon that people should legally be allowed to be THIS good at guitar. Makes the rest of us look bad!

I signed up for PPP!

March 26th, 2008 · No Comments

Well today, my blog was approved to start writing Sponsored Posts courtesy of payperpost!

I signed up because I figured that it will be good experience to write about things that I might not normally write about. Plus, any approved posts get paid! In-fact, I will get $20 just to write this post (Providing it is approved obviously! I will keep you updated!).

As I have only been approved for the last 20 minutes or so, I can’t really give you much information about how good PPP is, but briefly checking out some of the offers etc, they seem pretty good, and I have heard good reviews about their Customer Service as well, so all in all, I am looking forward to taking advantage of as many opportunities as possible!

Also, as your blog gets more popular, based on things like Google PageRank and Alexa etc, then more opportunities with bigger payouts are open to you. All good in my eyes!

I learnt about this blog from reading another blog. Unfortunately, I can’t remember the Name/URL as it was a while ago, but I thought, heck, I’ll give it a try and see what comes out of it!

Hopefully if I do start making some money out of this, I will spend it on advertising this site and starting up a few other sites that I have planned.

Setting up your own web server

March 21st, 2008 · No Comments

There are various reasons why you would want to set up your own web server such as developing dynamic web applications locally for testing purposes or if you would like to just host your website from your computer.

You can approach the situation from different angles either installing and configuring each individual package seperately (e.g. PHP, Apache, mySQL). Or using a prepackaged system otherwise know as AMP packages (Apache, mySQL, PHP). There are various packages for all types of operating systems or requirements.

If you are on windows i would recommend Wamp Server It was easy to install and operate aswell as including all the functionality that i needed. For Mac i have only used MAMP which is suitable for the job and includes a widget for enabling it’s features although I’ve had some difficulties with enabling mySQL on this install and may switch to the XAMPP a feature rich AMP package which includes more then just a standard AMP release. However there are more packages available then this which you can find some more on Wikipedia

10 Things I Hate The Most

March 14th, 2008 · 9 Comments

Sorry I haven’t been very active this week. Have been super busy with work and too much other stressful stuff to be able to think of anything to write. But today, on the bus home, I thought of a fun post to write.

In no particular order, here is my list of:

10 Things I Hate The Most

  • Chavs who play their music loud on the bus.
  • People who allow their dogs to foul on the street and don’t clean it up.
  • People who walk slowly, and/or don’t walk in a straight line so seem to take up entire widths of paths.
  • When my computer decides to take 15 minutes to ‘finish loading’ when you turn it on.
  • Bank charges.
  • Drum ‘n’ Bass. (How the hell can anyone actually listen and enjoy that? Especially at 7:30AM!)
  • Stella.
  • Tomatoes.
  • Scroungers.
  • Waking up at 6.30AM monday to friday.

If you agree or disagree with anything on the list or can think of anything else to add to the list, then feel free to comment!

Gig Review: Stiff Little Fingers @ Oxford Carling Academy

Gig Review: Stiff Little Fingers + Support
Oxford Carling Academy
Sunday 9th March

I only went to this gig because I wanted to go to a gig this month, and I am always up for listening to new music, even though this band is hardly ‘new’! So basically, I had no idea what they sounded like or any preconceptions on what the gig was going to be like.

Well first of all, let’s review the support band. I don’t even know their name, the guy mumbled when he talked, and pretty much mumbled when he sung. Basically, they sucked. They had no timing at all, I couldn’t exactly be classed as a musical genius or anything, but quite a fair few times, I was thinking “ooh that didn’t sound right at all” and I am pretty sure most of the other people in there were thinking the same, and glancing at each other, silently saying “WTF is this?”.

Stiff Little Fingers were quite good. I liked how catchy they were. But I have to admit, I am not a great fan of bands that talk over and over again about politics, but to be fair, they formed in 1977 in Northern Island, so have more of a reason to be ‘Political’.

One thing that did annoy me quite a bit though was the extremely long time (about an hour) between the support band and Stiff Little Fingers finally getting on stage. I don’t know if they were waiting for someone to turn up or it could have been that wanted to just wait until 9pm to start, but in my opinion, it is pretty rude. There was no explanation either, would have taken 2 seconds to say “sorry we’re late people”.

All in all, given that the support band sucked, a long wait, and a lot of ‘Politics’ talk, I did quite enjoy their music. Have a listen to them on their MySpace page.

Storm Warning

March 7th, 2008 · No Comments

I know this is going to be a bit of a geeky post. But i recently finished writing a brief report on various network/computer security issues such as worms, viruses, DoS attacks and logic bombs.

After briefly reading about the Storm Worm which was discovered on January 17th 2007 which quickly propagated across the whole of the globe infecting massive amounts of computers. It was estimated to have infected between 250,000 - 50,000,000 (depending on who’s views you consider). It formed a huge botnet of zombie machine’s which some experts believed had the potential power to take entire countries off the Internet if the creator(s) decided to. It is also believed to have more computing power then today’s top super computers such as blue gene.

The worm is said to be declining though due to patches released by Microsoft which limit it’s capacities, however it is still  in operation.

You can read more about the worm here, and also about the botnet it had here.

Internet Guide: Exporting/Importing RSS Feeds

March 6th, 2008 · No Comments

A few posts ago, I wrote a guide on RSS feeds. What they are etc and how to use them.

Well at one point in the post, I wrote that I wasnt sure if you could move all your feeds in one go.

Well, it turns out, you can! And its super easy! All you need to do is look for something to do with OPML files. All you need to do is save the OPML file to your computer, load up a different RSS Reader, then Import that file. And then its all done. Keeps all the folder structures the same aswell.

I have moved from the bad SharpReader program to the nice NetVibes.com RSS Service.
